Just Browsing, Thanks!

A friend sent you a link to a cat hammock video last month because she thought it was funny. You clicked. You looked. You did not buy a cat hammock because you don’t have a cat.

Now you’ve seen cat hammock ads on every surface you own for 30 days.

We have all been there. One errant, “what’s that about?” click and you’re bombarded with “targeted” ads.

This is not a glitch. It’s behavioral targeting working exactly as designed. You expressed interest, technically, in cat hammocks. The algorithm noted it. The campaign is probably hitting its delivery goals. Somewhere, a dashboard shows you as a “likely cat hammock buyer” and now, a “pet owner.”

You are not a likely cat hammock buyer. The data just thinks you are.

Looking Is Not Buying

Behavioral targeting is very good at collecting evidence of interest. It knows what you clicked, what you searched, what you saw, and which sites you visited. From there, a model can make a reasonable guess about what you might want next.

Sometimes that guess is useful. But looking is not buying.

Digital video now commands 60% of total U.S. TV and video ad spend, representing $81.9 billion this year. As more money moves into CTV and digital video, the quality of the audience underneath that spend matters more.

CTV targeting has largely inherited digital advertising assumptions: demographic overlays, modeled lookalike audiences, ACR-based content segments, and third-party identity graphs stitching together household behavior across screens. More sophisticated than a click. Still probabilistic at their core. They tell you who a household probably is and what they probably watch. They rarely tell you what they really buy and do in the real world.

Same Behaviors. Different Customers.

Consider two people who both searched for “high protein breakfast,” visited a recipe site, and watched fitness content. From a behavioral perspective, they may look almost identical.

But one buys four containers of the same Greek yogurt brand every week at their favorite store. The other picked up a single cup six months ago while traveling and never bought it again.

Those are completely different customers with completely different value to a CPG advertiser. In a behavioral model, they’re the same person.

The model can’t tell the difference. The register can.

The Combination Nobody Else Has

Infinite Video brings together Infillion’s proprietary purchase, location, and zero-party audience intelligence, giving advertisers a more precise way to reach consumers based on real-world activity.

Infillion Catalina is built on direct integrations with grocery, drug, and mass retail POS systems: 420 million shopper IDs and 10 billion-plus transactions. The acquisition of Foursquare adds 16 billion human-verified check-ins and intelligence covering more than 100 million points of interest worldwide, complementing Gimbal’s first-party location intelligence. Zero-party survey data adds preferences shared directly by streaming viewers.

Consider a CPG brand running a frozen meal campaign on Infinite Video. Purchase intelligence identifies households that have bought in the category recently, including loyal customers, competitive buyers, and lapsed purchasers. Location intelligence adds context around visits to relevant grocery retailers, while zero-party data helps refine the audience based on information consumers have chosen to share.

And because these capabilities are connected within the Infillion platform, that intelligence can do more than inform who sees an ad. It can help advertisers understand what happens afterward.

The Loop That Actually Closes

The same purchase and visitation intelligence that informs your audience strategy can also help measure whether your campaign worked. “Closed-loop attribution” is one of the most overused phrases in digital advertising. Most of what it describes is post-hoc reconciliation: campaign data from one vendor, purchase data from another, foot traffic from a third, all stitched together after the flight closes in an attempt to draw a straight line between ad and outcome.

That’s not a closed loop. That’s a spreadsheet.

Infinite Video brings media execution, purchase intelligence, and visitation intelligence together within the Infillion platform. Advertisers can connect video exposure to real-world outcomes, from store visitation and purchase attribution to incremental sales lift and automated in-flight optimization based on sales results.

The Question Worth Asking

The next time you’re evaluating a CTV or digital video partner, ask this: Where does your audience intelligence come from, can you connect media exposure to real-world outcomes, and is your measurement built on the same foundation?

There’s a meaningful difference between reaching people who appear interested and understanding whether advertising influenced what they did next.

That difference starts with the data foundation. And it’s what makes Infinite Video a different proposition for advertisers looking to connect attention to action.
